Tracker funds (Index (tracker) funds)

These are equity funds that ‘track’ one or more of the stock market indices, such as the FTSE 100 or FTSE All share. Because they require a minimum level of management (they only have to hold the same shares as the index they track), the management charges and initial charges tend to be lower than managed funds. However, there are variations between funds. A fund may not hold all the shares in an index, or may hold slightly different quantities, and so may not track the index exactly. The charges associated with funds can vary. As ever, it pays to shop around.
