Share dealing costs for small numbers of shares

It costs quite a lot to operate a share register and companies naturally prefer not to have very many small shareholders. Quite often you will find companies offering a low-cost share dealing service to encourage small shareholders to sell small parcels of shares (or buy some more shares). One offer we have seen recently is from the insurance giant Aviva. The dealing cost is 20p per share to sell, up to a maximum of £30, and £30 commission on buying. For selling very small numbers of shares (up to about 100) this is an attractive deal. However, there are several stockbroking services that charge around £12 per deal (usually slightly more if there are certificates) so the £30 deal offered by Aviva is not so attractive if you want to sell more than 100 shares.
